October Cleanup & Catch the King
LRNow hosts cleanups along our Virginia Beach waterways to remove marine debris, improve water quality, and keep our city’s waters healthy and safe. Cleanups may be land-based and/or water-based depending on the location chosen for any given month. Please review all details carefully so you know what to expect when you arrive.
The October Cleanup will be based at Lynnhaven Colony Park in order to clean the trail and drainage areas that run from there to First Landing Park. It will be only land based this month.
This weekend is also the largest King Tide of the year. We will have an information table on how to help our partner, Wetlands Watch, by mapping the King Tide throughout Virginia Beach this weekend. Volunteers are encouraged to map after the cleanup or learn more to participate on Sunday! Learn more at: https://www.wetlandswatch.org/catchtheking
We are partnering with BoBo’s Fine Chicken who is the sponsor for the Adopt-A-Park program for Lynnhaven Colony Park. Thank you, BoBo’s, for your stewardship of this space year-round and we are happy to support your efforts during our October Cleanup! If you are not yet familiar with BoBo’s, they make everything in-house from scratch using family recipes and quality ingredients – many of them sourced from other small, family-run businesses. We hope you stop by before and/or after the cleanup and support this local business!
Please register if you plan to participate in a cleanup so you do not miss important information. Coordinators email details about meetup locations, dress, safety concerns and weather updates to registered participants by email. If dangerous weather cancels or postpones a cleanup, registered participants will receive an email by 8 am the day of the cleanup.
Appropriate dress and shoe wear are required. Cleanups usually occur in brushy, thorny, and muddy terrain which require full body protection. Closed-toed, sturdy shoes that can get wet and dirty should be worn for land-based cleanups. Water shoes are appropriate in kayaks only. Bare feet are never permitted. Hats, sunscreen, insect repellent and a reusable water bottle are recommended.
