Spring Cage Roundup
It's time to pull up your cages and see what has grown! It is time to turn in the spat you have been growing and grab some new cages! I will be collecting your spat cages for counting at the Brock Environmental Center on Thursday and Friday, April 24-25, from 8am to 3pm.
This event is for the Spring cohort. If you received cages in the fall, we will hold an event in September for counting and collecting.
The Brock Environmental Center is located at 3663 Marlin Bay Drive. You will come in through the Pleasure House Point Parking area off Chesterfield Ave and drive through to the Brock Environmental Center. We will be collecting along the driveway so drive around until you see us, and we will take your spat cages and give you new ones.
The return of each cage is important to gauge settlement potential across the Lynnhaven River. If you are not able to return your spat that day, please contact me ASAP for alternative arrangements.
To remove your cages from the water:
- Shake the cages in the water to remove as much sediment and as many creatures as possible.
- Please don’t remove your cages from the water before the morning of delivery.
- Pull them from the water and let them drain for a few minutes; then hose them off (not hard) and let them drain again.
- Place the cages in your vehicle on plastic bags or an easily cleanable lining.
- Oysters can remain out of water for a sustained period of time as long as they are not in the sun.
- DO NOT place your oysters in buckets of water for delivery. Whether salt or fresh, oysters know they are in the water and will try to feed. This is harmful because the oysters will use up the oxygen in the water and suffocate.
- Bring them to the roundup as quickly as you are able after removing them from the water.
